Sister Della Mae Quinn, R.S.M.

Sister Della Mae Quinn, R.S.M., who was a principal and teacher in the archdiocese and also held a leadership position in her religious community, died Nov. 12 at Montefiore Hospital in the Bronx. She was 87.

She served as principal of St. Joseph’s School, Spring Valley, 1966-1970, and Transfiguration, Tarrytown, 1958-1960, and was administrator of St. Michael’s Home, Staten Island, 1970-1976, where she taught, 1955-1956.

She taught at the following schools: Our Lady of Victory, Dobbs Ferry, 1988-1989, 1976-1977 and 1950-1953, and was secretary there, 1990-1995; St. Margaret Mary, the Bronx, 1956-1958; St. Michael’s, Staten Island, 1955-1956; St. Cecilia’s, Manhattan, 1953-1955; and Good Shepherd, Manhattan, 1948-1950.

She served as provincial secretary of the Sisters of Mercy New York Community from 1960 to 1966.

She was an administrative assistant at the Sisters of Mercy Generalate in Potomac, Md., 1977-1979, and at the Secretariat of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious, 1979-1986.

She also provided support services at a number of hospitals and nursing homes in more recent years.

Born in Cicero, Ill., she entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1945 and made final vows in 1951. She was formerly known as Sister Marie Bernarde.

She earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Fordham University.

A Funeral Mass was offered Nov. 15 in the chapel at Marion Woods, Hartsdale. Burial was in Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne.
