Sister Jacqueline Banks, F.H.M.

Sister Jacqueline Banks, F.H.M., who taught for more than 30 years at St. Joseph of the Holy Family School in Harlem, died Oct. 4 at Kateri Residence in Manhattan. She was 77.

Sister Jacqueline, formerly known as Sister Denis Marie, taught at St. Joseph’s, 1974-1986 and 1987-2007. She also taught at St. Aloysius School, 1956-1959 and 1971-1973; St. Cecilia’s, 1963-1966; and Annunciation, 1973-1974, all in Manhattan, and at Our Lady Help of Christians School on Staten Island, 1986-1987.

She also served on the General Congregation of the Franciscan Handmaids of Mary and as congregation secretary; was commissioner emeritus of the archdiocesan Office of Black Ministry; and was a core member of Women in Prayer of the Central Harlem Vicariate.

Born in Albany, she earned a bachelor’s degree at St. Francis College, Brooklyn. She entered religious life in 1951 and professed final vows in 1960.

A Funeral Mass was offered Oct. 8 at St. Aloysius Church, with burial in Resurrection Cemetery, Farmingdale.
