Sister Joan Bronson, O.S.C., who served at St. Clare’s Monastery in the Bronx for almost 50 years, died Nov. 7 at Schervier Nursing Care Center, also in the Bronx. She was 81.

She served in a variety of vital roles that assisted her community through the external maintenance of the monastery. When the community prepared to move to a smaller residence in 1998, health issues prevented Sister Joan from joining them and she retired to Schervier.

Born in the Bronx, she entered the Order of St. Clare, also known as the Poor Clares, in 1949. She professed final vows in 1958. She was formerly known as Sister Mary Josephine.

She is survived by her brother, Joseph Bronson.

A Funeral Mass was offered Nov. 12 at St. Clare’s Monastery, Wappingers Falls. Burial was at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
