Sister Joan Caldano, F.S.P., who served both as an educator and in health care ministry, died Dec. 10. She was 76.

She taught in the archdiocese at St. Matthew’s School, Hastings-on- Hudson, 1966-1968; St. Patrick’s School, Yorktown Heights, 1961-1966; and Assisium Business School, Manhattan, 1959-1960. She also taught at schools in New Jersey.

She served at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx as a patient and family advocate, 1987-2003, and as a cancer care technician, 1982-1987. In 1999 she received the Distinguished Member Award from the New York Society for Healthcare Consumer Advocacy.

She also served her order as assistant provincial superior, 1978-1981, director of ministry, 1974-1978, and as provincial secretary, 1972 -1974.

Born in New York City, she entered the Franciscan Sisters of Peace in 1955 and professed final vows in 1962. She held a bachelor’s degree from Ladycliff College and a master’s from the State University at New Paltz. She was previously known as Sister Ellen Michael.

A Funeral Mass was offered Dec. 13 at Marian Woods, Hartsdale. Burial was at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Yonkers.
