Sister Loretta Ruvo, R.S.H.M.

Sister Loretta Ruvo, R.S.H.M., who taught in Rome for 32 years and later served at the Bronx Catechetical Office, died May 27 at Marymount Convent, Tarrytown. She was 68.

Starting in 1964, she served in Rome at Instituto Marymount and Marymount International School, teaching at both the elementary and middle school levels. She was principal of the kindergarten and elementary school of Instituto Marymount, 1987-1996. She was also a catechist at a local parish.

Sister Loretta taught at Ascension School, Manhattan, in 1996, before becoming the regional director of the Bronx Catechetical Office. She was appointed director of formation for the Eastern American Province of the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary in 2000 and later director of vocation promotion and chairperson of the province formation team. During this time, she also served in part-time ministry at Holy Rosary parish, the Bronx.

Born in New York City, she entered the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary in 1961 and professed her final vows in 1968. She received a bachelor’s degree in history from Marymount College, and a master’s in religious education from Fordham University. She also studied at the Salesian University in Rome.

Her brother, Msgr. John Ruvo, senior priest at St. Joseph’s parish, New Rochelle, and her sister, Marie, survive her.

A Funeral Mass was offered May 31 at Marymount Convent, Tarrytown. Burial was at Mount Calvary Cemetery, White Plains.
