Sister Marie Jerome Cheevers, F.S.P.

Sister Marie Jerome Cheevers, F.S.P., who was a principal and teacher in the archdiocese, died April 5 at St. Cabrini Nursing Home in Dobbs Ferry. She was 95.

She was principal of St. Patrick’s School in Verplanck, 1962-1968, and was a teacher there, 1958-1962. She also was superior of her community, 1962-1968.

She taught at St. Teresa’s School, Tarrytown, 1969-1973; St. Patrick’s, Yorktown Heights, 1955-1958; Our Lady Queen of Martyrs, Manhattan, 1947-1949 and 1934-1935; and Sacred Heart, Highland Falls, 1935-1940.

She also taught in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. She retired in 1988 to the Franciscan Sisters of Peace Congregation Center in Haverstraw and moved to Marian Woods, Hartsdale, in 2001.

Born in Clifton, N.J., she entered the Franciscan Sisters in 1932 and made final vows in 1939. She held a bachelor’s degree in history from Ladycliff College in Highland Falls.

A Funeral Mass was offered April 9 in the chapel at Marian Woods, with burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Yonkers.
