Sister Marie Murphy, M.M.

Sister Marie Murphy, M.M., who taught in Mexico and Guatemala, died Jan. 18 at Maryknoll Residential Care IV. She was 87.

Assigned to Mexico in 1951, she taught primary school at the Maryknoll Sisters school in Merida, Yucatan, and at schools in Peto and Tzucabab until 1963. She was assigned to Guatemala in 1964 where she taught English in the Jesuit High School there. She returned to the United States in 1965 to spend a year with the Maryknoll Sisters Cloister before going back to Merida to teach until 1968.

In the early 1970s, her mother’s failing health necessitated that Sister Marie return closer to home. She served as a nurse at Frances Schervier Home and Hospital in the Bronx until her mother’s death in 1987. She continued to work in public health service as a nurse in the Bronx until 1993 and in Tarrytown from 1994 to 2002.

Born in Yonkers, she entered Maryknoll in 1946 taking the religious name Sister M. Jane Cordis. She professed final vows in 1952. She held a bachelor’s degree in education from Maryknoll Teachers College and a diploma as a licensed practical nurse from Grasslands School of Practical Nursing, Valhalla.

A Funeral Mass was offered in the main chapel of the Maryknoll Sisters Center in Ossining on Jan. 21. Burial was in the sisters’ cemetery.
