Sister Mary Andre Murphy, P.B.V.M.

Sister Mary Andre Murphy, P.B.V.M., who served at Holy Rosary School in the Bronx for 11 years, died April 8 at Mount St. Joseph, New Windsor. She was 99.

Sister Mary Andre served Holy Rosary as librarian, 1990-1996, and as a teacher, 1986-1990 and 1951-1952. She taught at St. Paul the Apostle, Yonkers, 1978-1986; Our Lady of Solace, the Bronx, 1976-1978; Mount St. Joseph Academy, Newburgh, 1971-1974; St. Mary’s School, Fishkill, 1959-1961; St. Jude’s, Manhattan, 1953-1959; St. Michael, Manhattan, 1952-1953; and St. Frances of Rome, the Bronx, 1946-1951.

She also served in Queens and New Jersey.

More recently, she was maintenance supervisor of Mount St. Joseph Retreat Center, New Windsor, 1996-2009.

Born in New York City, she entered the Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in 1944 and professed final vows in 1949.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Manhattan College, the Bronx.

A Funeral Mass was celebrated April 12 at Mount St. Joseph Chapel, New Windsor. Burial was in Mount St. Joseph Cemetery, New Windsor.
